Videogames helped a teen lose weight?

Wired.com has an article about a high school teenager who lost 150 pounds in 18 months. Surprisingly, he attributes his success to his love of video games! He thought of his diet as a video game in which calories and exercise was all about earning points and defeating the enemy every day.
I think this is a good example of how students can learn and apply what they know and enjoy about technology to help better themselves in real life. We all know that connecting what students know to new material is crucial to student learning. This student knew video game strategy and applied it to dieting with great success. What can we do to tap into what students know and love about technology?

  1. I like this! Maybe I need to try his diet; nothing else has worked!

  2. I like the idea of using the wii for physical education classes. Last year when the physical education teacher in my middle school was looking at purchasing new curriculum he looked at getting some wii's. Not really sure why he did not get some. I feel that you always have students who do not like gym and this way you could engage them into some type of activity.

  3. I love the Wii! It's a great way to exercise without actually having to get in the car and drive to the gym (let's face it, the car does not warm up in the time it takes to get there). Especially the Wii fit where it shows your balance. I was really disappointed when my brother sold his to "upgrade" to a different system.

Pete, I never would have thought to use the Wii, or something similar, as part of a gym curriculum. I have siblings in middle school and they would LOVE that! Althought I wonder how much "abuse" a Wii can take with constant use from middle/high schoolers.
